(LEX 18)– Those who never made it home were honored at Camp Nelson in a Memorial Day ceremony.
Like many who gathered at Camp Nelson, guest speaker 96-year-old Captain Walter Cox Jr. knows about loss. During his 58 months in the U.S Army, Captain Cox saw many die on the front lines in the Battle of the Bulge in Strasbourg, France during World War II.
“I saw so many killed and the Lord blessed me and kept me from being killed. Although, they were falling all around me,” he told LEX 18.
Cox returned home, but he said that the things he saw, he will never forget.
Veterans of other wars said they won’t forget the losses they witnessed either. On Monday, the fallen heroes were honored and their sacrifices remembered.
The Memorial Day ceremony at Camp Nelson just finished.
Many came out to honor our fallen heroes. They also had the honor of hearing from a 96-yr-old WWII veteran.

Not only did we hear from a WWII veteran, we also got to see “Yankee-Doodle” – a vintage, restored WWII B-25 bomber. @LEX18News pic.twitter.com/779MvTDk1y
