RICHMOND, Ky. (LEX 18)– Officials with the Blue Grass Army Depot confirmed Wednesday the successful destruction of the first mustard agent-filled munition at the facility in Madison County.

More than 500 tons of chemical weapons have been idling at the depot, stored in rockets and missiles, since the early 1940s.

Colorado is the only other state with such an arsenal within its state’s lines. That site began the destruction of its weapons in 2016.

Officials say both sites will be complete by December 2023.
