LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– A popular Lexington playground that was torn down last year has plans to rebuild.

The city’s parks and recreation team is looking for volunteers to help with a community build project for Shillito Playground.

“It was always such a unique park. There was no park like it in Lexington, so I loved taking them here because you could just really explore,” said Elizabeth Withers.

The playground she grew up with is now fenced in and closed.

“Definitely sad. It’s just weird. It’s kind of like a little monument, something unique to Lexington for me,” she told LEX 18.

As we get into the summer, families remember why they loved coming to the unique playground. The popular play area was torn down this past winter. Elizabeth Withers tells LEX 18 that she spent a lot of time at the park, from going as a child, to now bringing her own kids.

Lexington Parks and Recreation announced a change of plans this week, a community rebuild project is set for this September.

A design is in place, the city just needs your help to build it.

“That’s exciting to have something new coming. My kids will definitely be looking forward to something new in its place,” said Withers.

Anyone 16 and older can sign up to volunteer on the Lexington Park and Recreation website.
