MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– A special roadside marker was unveiled Sunday for the lady who started the first hospital in Richmond.

The roadside marker was unveiled at Lynwood.

The marker tells the history of Pattie A. Clay and her husband Brutus Clay.

Pattie took care of the ill, and after her death, Brutus bought a house to use as a hospital dedicated to her.

That facility was named the Pattie A. Clay Hospital, and the name was carried to a larger hospital, which is on the Eastern Bypass.

LEX18 spoke to the contractor who renovated the Clays’ home and why he wanted to.

“There wasn’t anything other than her namesake of the hospital here that told her story and we’re just hoping to keep that alive now and the history of the house is part of that too,” said Bryan Tipton.

In 2003, Baptist Health bought the hospital.
