(LEX 18) – The official start of summer means many families are getting ready to send the kids off to camp and we’ve got some tips on how to keep them safe.
Before you even step foot on the campsite, doctors recommend paying them a visit for a physical.
“I look for just anything abnormal on the physical exam, do they have a heart condition that hasn’t been picked up, do they have a skin rash that could get infected, are they already injured, do they have a weak ankle for example?” Dr. Jennifer Shu explains.
Make sure your camper is up to date on their shots.
More camps are urging families to follow vaccination policies in the wake of measles outbreaks across the US. So far this year, there have been more than one thousand cases.
Once you’re there, the good news is health concerns at camps are pretty minor. Remember to ask about the camp’s policy for handling medical emergencies.
