LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) - When you are in a hurry, there is no time for car trouble.

To get ahead of issues you can avoid due to cold weather, AAA advises scheduling an oil change and check-up for your car.

AAA Blue Grass Fleet Manager Jed Bowles said he also recommends keeping a pulse on the pressure in your tires.

"You need to have that checked especially when the cold weather hits, you're going to see that pressure start to drop. And the tread. Making sure that, you know, you replace the tires in a routine and timely fashion," said Bowles.

He explained the importance of stocking your trunk year-round such that you are prepared when help is not close by: "The winter-preparedness kit should have WD40, a deicer, gloves, a tire gauge, a jump pack. Also something to clean the ice off your windshield and brush the snow off and then it's always good to have some blankets in case you need them."

Bowles explained more than half of the accidents on the road are due to cell phones and when the weather is messy, those status increase.

"A situation could arise where you do have to break suddenly or you have to be a defensive driver to someone that might not be as prepared as you are," Bowles said.

To increase your chances of a safe ride, AAA recommended planning ahead.

"You get ready to go to work or wherever, give yourself more time," said Bowles. "You know, especially if you've got ice or if you've got snow that you've got to clear off because you and I both seen people driving down the road and they've got, you know, they try to rush to work. And half of their windshield is defrosted and half isn't."
