ANDERSON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Anderson County Schools has responded to the debate about a banner students held during last week's football game.

The banner referenced President Donald Trump's campaign slogan from the 2016 election.

The banner read "Make America Great Again. Trump Those Patriots," which aimed at the opposing team, the Lincoln County Patriots.

Some were upset about the political references. Others thought the sign was clever.

In a Facebook post, Anderson County Schools says the theme for Friday’s game was "the patriotic 'America Out'" where students wore red, white and blue and had American flags. The district says the banner matched the patriotic theme and "was not meant to be a political statement,” but instead a play on words.

The Counsel for the Board of Education says "Read literally, the banner suggested the way to make America great again was to have the hometown team win its homecoming game, rather than having anything to do with the goings-on in Washington, D.C."

The counsel says the students won't face any disciplinary action.
