FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18) — Attorney General Daniel Cameron has filed a brief with the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth District.
This part of the disagreement between Governor Andy Beshear's newest restrictions that went into effect on November 20. Those included the closing of in-person classes for all K-12 schools, including private and public.
Lawyers from the Attorney General's Office and Danville Christian Academy argued that the governor's order violated the First Amendment and the Commonwealth’s Religious Freedom and Restoration Act.
Earlier this week, a federal judge ruledin favor of 17 Christian schools and AG Cameron, saying the restrictions did violate the First Amendment.
Governor Beshear filed an emergency appeal following that ruling, saying the state would experience "imminent irreparable harm" if religious schools return to class this Monday.
In response to Beshear's appeal, Cameron's office says the brief filed Saturday has the support of more than 1,500 parents and 20 religious schools.
