LONDON, Ky. (LEX 18) — The London-Laurel County Economic Development Authority posted that at least four people were injured on Wednesday morning in an "explosion" at Borden Dairy Company in London.

Authorities in London added that fire units responded to the scene after a worker at an area business reported an "explosion" at the company. The City of London noted that fire crews worked quickly to contain the scene and begin decontamination operations.

"The chemical involved in the incident has been identified as Hyperflex (Acid Sanitizer), which contains phosphoric acid and nitric acid," a release from the city read. "While this product is corrosive and can cause significant health effects with direct contact, we are relieved to report that no life-threatening injuries have been reported at this time."

The city added that fire units worked with personnel to ensure the hazard was contained to protect the public, and provide medical support.

"When the call came in, when you heard that immediately, explosion, especially in facilities like these, you think the worst," said London Fire Department Battalion Chief Brandon Wagers.

Wagers said that injuries included chemical vapor burns.

"We were more worried about their airwaves as well because of the vapor, and skin contact," he said.
