LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — The Lexington Fire Department has named their latest junior fire chief.

Abdul Alyafi, a fifth grader at Brenda Cowan Elementary, was awarded his new title in a ceremony Monday morning.

As part of his duties, Alyafi gets a new uniform, an official badge and a slate of duties for October which is Fire Prevention month. He'll be appearing on local news shows, taking tours and meeting with the Fire Chief and City Council.

The title is especially fitting for Alyafi and his school. Brenda Cowan Elementary is named after Lexington Fire's first African-American female firefighter. Lt. Cowan was killed in the line of duty in 2004.

Congrats to Alyafi.
