(LEX 18) — Former South Bend, Ind. mayor Pete Buttigieg is calling for Democrats to join together to take control of congress and defeat Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The candidate for the Democratic nomination in this November's presidential election mentioned the Ky. senator during a couple of campaign stops Saturday.

"I am here to make the case for politics that pays attention to the effect that our nominee will have on those crucial House and Senate and other races across the country, so that we can keep the House in the right hands and send Mitch McConnell into retirement," Buttigieg said during his speech.

The former mayor also mentioned fellow Democratic candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, who he says he respects, but has a different approach.
