LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — When you're out getting your cup of coffee this morning, how about drinking it with a police officer? Law enforcement officials will be out across the city today hoping to sit down and talk with people in the community.

It's part of an international event called Coffee With A Cop, which began in 2011. Officers from the Hawthorne Police Department in California were looking for ways to interact with the people they serve every day.

The event's goal is to help build trust and relationships between law enforcement officials and their community.

In Kentucky, there are events in Lexington, Versailles, Richmond, Georgetown, and Louisville, among other cities.

The Lexington Police Department says it's a great way to reach out to people.

"This is a way that we can kind of all relax, sit down, take some notes and get some information from the community,” said Gordon. “Just be able to go back and kind of sit down and understand what some of the community problems are."

Fayette County Sheriff Deputies will be at the McDonald’s on Russell Cave Road between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. Lexington Police Officers will be at the locations listed below between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m.:

  • 4131 Tates Creek Centre
  • 3100 Pimlico Parkway
  • 3765 Palomar Center Drive
  • 2012 Harrodsburg Road
  • 357 S. Limestone Avenue
