LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A motorcyclist was killed Wednesday morning in a head-on collision with a car on Lexington's far north side.

Authorities said the crash occurred just after 7 a.m. on Russell Cave Road near Greenwich Pike.

The Fayette County Coroner's office said 37-year-old John Floyd Malone of Cynthiana was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of a passenger car was sent to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said speed likely was a factor in the crash.

"I believe the speed limit on this portion is actually 55, but it slows down down there due to the curve," said Sgt. Billy Richmond. "There's a pretty curve just on the other side of the scene that the motorcyclist would have came through

Police have opened an investigation into the crash but at this point believe it was a case of the motorcyclist driving too fast.

"Speed limits are posted for a reason," Richmond said. "No passing zones are posted for a reason."

Traffic in the area was snarled as emergency crews worked the scene.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
