LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Construction crews working on the New Circle Road widening project finished ahead of schedule. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says it fully reopened the on and off ramps at Leestown Road Sunday night, nearly two weeks earlier than initially planned.

According to a release, traffic on Leestown Road continues to operate with one lane in each direction, shifted to the outside lanes, while the inner lanes remain closed for ongoing construction.

The interchange improvements will allow Leestown Road to return to two lanes in each direction by mid- to late-December, which officials say will reduce traffic congestion during the remaining construction work.

According to a release, the ramp work is part of the larger New Circle Road widening project, scheduled for completion in 2027. The project aims to increase capacity and improve safety and travel times in the rapidly growing area of Lexington.

The release says that all construction work and closures remain tentative and subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies, and other factors beyond the Department of Highways' control.
