UPDATE: 1 killed in hit-run on I-75 in Madison County

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — One person was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Friday morning on Interstate Highway 75 in Madison County.

Authorities said it appeared that two vehicle were involved in some kind of accident near mile marker 86 in Richmond caused both drivers to pull to the side of the road. Police said one of the drivers, a male, exited his vehicle and was hit by a third vehicle, which did not stop.

The man later was pronounced dead. Kentucky State Police told LEX 18 that the man has been identified as 58-year-old Robert Hepler, of Johnson City, Tennessee.

Police did not immediately offer a description of the car that struck the man and fled the scene.

Officials closed down the northbound lanes I-75 four hours as as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

State transportation officials said the roadway was reopened to traffic around 8:20 a.m.

An accident reconstruction crew was on the scene.
