Zekial Hofstettor appeared in Scott County District Court Monday for an arraignment on reckless homicide charges in connection with the death of Christian Best.
According to Georgetown Police, Hofstettor allegedly had a loaded pistol while driving and reached into his back seat for something. That's when he, according to the uniform citation, "somehow manipulated the trigger, causing it to discharge."
The bullet struck and killed Best.
During today's court appearance, Hofstettor's attorney entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf. Judge Bolton Bevins reduced his bond from $100,000 cash to $50,000.
If Hofstettor posts bond, he will be required to take weekly drug screenings, wear an ankle monitor, and remain under house arrest.
Hofstettor is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on May 6.
