LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A former Fayette County Schools employee was charged with sexual assault of a student on a district bus, officials said.

Lexington police arrested 18-year-old Brandon Tyreese Brown on Thursday morning.

Police said the alleged assault took place Nov. 12 while Brown was working as a bus monitor.

According to the police report, Brown was "in a position of authority" when the alleged assault took place. Police spokeswoman Brenna Angel said the alleged victim was a 16-year-old girl.

Brown was charged with first-degree sexual abuse.

Schools spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall said Brown had passed a background check.

She issued the following statement: "There is absolutely no tolerance for the reported conduct of the employee in this incident and immediate action is taken when such a report is received.

"While we cannot discuss specifics, we do want to reassure our families that we take any situations of this nature very seriously.

"At the time of the reported incident, this individual was working as a substitute bus monitor. All employees must go through background checks including child abuse and neglect reports. His employment with the district ended the day we received the report."
