GEORGETOWN, Ky. (LEX 18) — Johnnie Jacobs, a retired Georgetown firefighter who received a double lung transplant, has died, according to family members

According to the #TeamJacobs Facebook page, Johnnie's wife posted that Jacobs has succumbed to his long term battle with Disquemative Interstital Pneumonia. The disease is attributed to long-term exposure to smoke.

"My love, my husband, my person lost his grueling battle tonight. He ultimately gave his life for a career that he loved. He fought so hard every day for his family. We had dreams and adventures planned that we will never get to do. I am shattered. I pray those babies will never forget how great their dad was and how much he loved them," wrote Katie Jacobs.

In 2017, the community rallied together in support of Jacobs by raising money for his family. Restaurants held fundraisers to contribute to medical expenses.

You can still donate to the family's fundraiser online.
