BATH COUNTY, KY (LEX News) — Cave Run Lake has been a destination for boaters, anglers, and families for decades — but a Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources game warden says even a peaceful day on the water can turn dangerous in an instant.
Game Warden Tim Brett has patrolled Kentucky waterways for more than nine years, and in that time he has seen firsthand how quickly things can go wrong — and what most drownings have in common.
"Life jackets or, personal flotation devisions. PFDs are probably number 1 as far as importance. We see a lot of people not wearing them, have them on the boat, or children not wearing them. Most drownings that happen in the state of Kentucky happen when people are not wearing a PFD," Brett said.
Brett says that holds true even for strong swimmers.
"Even if you think you can swim just fine. It doesn't really matter. Make sure you have a PFD in case of a boating accident, you get tired, cold, or anything can impact you in the water," Brett said.
He also encourages people to stay aware of their surroundings and avoid alcohol before heading out on the water.
Brett describes Cave Run Lake as a welcoming place — when everyone follows the rules.
"It's a nice lake when everyone is doing the right thing, but when people get careless it causes issues," Brett said.
