LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Linda Gorton won the Tuesday's Lexington mayoral primary with 46% of the vote, according to the state's election night website. Raquel Carter received 28% of the vote.
Candidates and supporters waited more than 3 hours after polls closed for results.
Gorton, who is seeking her 3rd term, said she approached the race the way she always does.
"I always look at every election as if I'm the underdog," Gorton said.
Gorton said her campaign strategy remains consistent regardless of the election cycle.
"They are never technically the same, but my strategies are the same. I am very grass roots, getting deep in community," Gorton said.
Gorton also expressed gratitude for voter turnout.
"I appreciate that people voted in bigger numbers apparently in the primary compared to past," Gorton said.
Carter, meanwhile, said she is focused on what comes next.
"As we move into the general (election), it's a great opportunity to show real contrast between old leadership and new leadership," Carter said.
Carter said she is bringing "nothing but positive energy" into the race.
As a breast cancer survivor, business owner, and mother, Carter said it is time for a new age in Lexington.
