Keeneland to kick off Fall Meet without fans on Friday

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Keeneland's Fall Meet will begin Friday with races running as normal, but the atmosphere inside will be different.

While a limited number of participants, like trainers and owners, as well as some sponsors and box holders, will be allowed to attend, no general admission tickets will be available.

But Keeneland leaders still want fans to be able to experience the races with "Keeneland at Home."

The site links to a downloadable program for each day, classic Keeneland recipes like burgoo as well as kits for at-home watch parties.

"We've made it really easy to really have everything you need for your own watch party that you can do from the comfort of your own home," said Christa Marillia, Keeneland Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.

There are also resources for restaurants and other businesses to host watch parties.

"We wanted to really make it easy for our tourism partners because we know that the pandemic has been extremely tough on all of us, especially our hospitality community," Marillia said.

And while fans can't be there this October, Marillia believes there is a silver-lining.

"I think that some of the enhancements that we've made in technology and a lot of those tools, wagering on your phone, I think some of those will continue to enhance the experience and just racing for years to come," she said.
