(LEX 18) — Kentucky-American Water customers will pay more for their water starting next month.
According to a press release, the Kentucky Public Service Commission approved a rate increase that, for customers using an average of 3,942 gallons of water per month, would add $6.82 to their bill.
The increase will raise customers rates by 14.31 percent. Residential customers will be charged $7.87 per 1,000 gallons, while commercial customers will be charged around $8 per 1,000 gallons.
The utility company says the extra money will go toward infrastructure improvements and system upgrades, and the rate request was primarily driven by more than $212 million in water treatment and distribution system improvements made since the company’s last rate filing.
“Kentucky American Water is committed to providing safe, clean, reliable and affordable water service to over half a million people in portions of 13 counties,” said Rob Burton, president of Kentucky American Water. “Our long-term, efficient and consistent approach to capital investment enables us to achieve the high level of water service our customers expect and deserve while also helping ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.”
The new rates take effect January 16 and will impact customers in Fayette County and 15 other counties across Kentucky.
