(LEX 18) — Investigators in South Carolina are working a death investigation involving a Kentucky woman found dead on September 20.

They say the burned body of 31-year-old Melissa Whitis was discovered dumped in a ditch on Lizzie Melton Road in Chester County, South Carolina. Whitis was originally from Frankfort, Kentucky, and authorities say she has no ties to the area. She was last seen alive on September 17 near I-40 in North Carolina.

The Chester County Sheriff's Office said it's using every resource available to get answers and is requesting the public's help to find out what happened to Whitis.

She has several distinctive tattoos which deputies used to identify her, including the names Ethan and Emily on her right foot.

If you have any information that could help in this investigation call the sheriff's office at 803-581-5131, especially if you had contact with her on September 17.
