The City of Lexington participated in National Drug Take Back Day on Saturday.

The event is designed to keep pills out of the hands of kids by safely discarding unused drugs.

"If someone thinks of it, they missed this event, you know most pharmacies have drop offs Hospitals and so forth. So probably call their local pharmacy and tell them I have some unused medications that I want to get rid of safely so children don't get a hold of or it gets in our water system. You know some people flush it down the toilet, we do not want that as we're here at Kentucky American Water. They don't want that either," said Lt. Corey Doane from the Lexington Police Department.

Organizers say that items such as pet medications, medicated ointments, and vitamins were also accepted.

If you missed Saturday's event, don't worry; it's held every spring and fall.
