LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Last-minute shopping good for local businesses

The week before Christmas is a busy time for local shops, as they face a flurry of last-minute customers.

At Bella Blooms Florist in Lexington, business is growing as Christmas draws closer. Owner Susan Otero has one word to describe it.

"Craziness,” said Otero. “But that's good. We love it. It keeps my flower fairies busy."

Cher Satisky, an employee at Bella Blooms, says they get about 35 to 45 orders a day this time of the year.

"It's a lot. It's a good thing,” said Satisky.

To make sure all those orders get delivered in time, Otero has to enlist help.

"We have one driver here. Then we have three other people that I bring in and it just depends,” she said. “I have lots of family and, believe me, they get the call."

Otero says she's even come in early or stayed late if a customer needs it.

Over at Ruth Hunt Candies’ store in Lexington, it's a sugar rush as people come in to buy holiday treats.

"It's been nuts,” said store manager Rwanda Crutcher. “We open the door at 9:00 a.m. and usually people are standing there waiting."

The candy store also has a post office inside, which means evens more feet are coming through the door.

"When they come in, if they're just coming in to mail, they may find something else that they want to pick up and oh, a gift for this one and a gift for that one,” said Crutcher

Other businesses in the area say they’re also keeping busy and some have adjusted hours to keep up with the Christmas demand.
