82-year-old woman killed in shooting near downtown Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — An 82-year-old woman has died following a shooting near downtown Lexington.

The shooting took place shortly before 4:00 p.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of West Fifth Street. The Fayette County Coroner's Office has identified Alice Carter as the shooting victim. Her death has been ruled a homicide.

A preliminary investigation found that Carter and a family member were getting out of a car when dozens of gunshots were exchanged between multiple people in separate vehicles. Carter was hit by a stray bullet and taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

Police said Carter and the family member were completely uninvolved with the shots being fired.
