PADUCAH, Ky. (LEX 18) — A Paducah woman is facing criminal abuse charges after Kentucky State Police said a juvenile in her care nearly died last year due to malnutrition.

Authorities arrested 52-year-old Laurie E. Pittman on Wednesday. She had been indicted on a charge of second-degree criminal abuse.

According to KSP, a male juvenile was taken in July 2019 to Baptist Health in Panducah with breathing problems.

"Emergency medical actions were taken by staff to save the life of the juvenile," according to a KSP statement.

The juvenile later was determined "to be suffering from severe malnutrition which had threatened his life."

Pittman was indicted following an investigation by KSP and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
