DANVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) — Dozens of law enforcement officers and their K9 dogs came out honor the life of Boyle County K9 Niki on Monday night, almost a week after she died from injuries caused by a car accident.

Niki had been with the Boyle County Sheriff's Office since 2013 and was traveling in the car with her handler, Capt. Casey McCoy, when they were involved in a crash on New Year's Eve, according to Boyle County Sheriff Derek Robins.

On Monday night, a memorial service for Niki was held at Southland Christian Church in Danville, followed by a procession through town involving law enforcement officers from departments across Kentucky.

"It's hard for him, his wife and his kids," Robbins said of McCoy. " That was a family member to them and whatever they need we're going to try to be there for them to help support them."

Niki was a trusted partner at work, but a best friend to the entire family at home, Robbins said.

"The dog is with you 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and it's hard to describe that bond unless you've had a dog," he said.
