RICHMOND, Ky. (LEX 18) — A Richmond man is in jail after police say he abused a dog and left it for dead in a dumpster.

According, to an arrest citation, Tyler Dabney has been charged with animal cruelty. Officers say he was playing with his wife's dog when the animal bit him while trying to grab a tennis ball.

Dabney confessed to strangling the animal and trying to drown him in the toilet bowl. The citation then states that he put the animal in a box, thinking it was dead, and threw it in a dumpster near the home.

The suspect's wife discovered the dog, who appeared to be alert and walking around. Dabney's wife also told authorities that once he found out the dog was still alive, he told her he would put the animal down on Friday once he got paid.

Dabney has been lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.
