LOUISVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) — Police are investigating after someone opened fire on protesters Saturday night in Louisville.

Louisville police confirm one man is dead and another person suffered an injury that is non-life-threatening.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. Saturday night in Jefferson Square Park, where protesters have camped out for the past few weeks.

Police cleared the park afterward so homicide detectives could investigate, and they said protests can continue but no one will be allowed to stay in the park overnight.

The victims have not been identified and there is no word on a possible suspect or suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at (502) 574-5673.

Louisville mayor Greg Fischer tweeted the following about the incident Saturday night:

"I am deeply saddened by the violence that erupted in Jefferson Square Park tonight, where those who have been voicing their concerns have been gathered. It is a tragedy that this area of peaceful protest is now a crime scene. My thanks to the first responders who assisted at the scene. I will have more to say tomorrow, as additional information becomes available."
