Police: Pike County man abandoned son at restaurant to get cigarettes

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (Mountain Top News) — A Pike County man was arrested after officials say he abandoned his son at a restaurant for over an hour while he went to get cigarettes.

According to Mountain Top News, police were called to Texas Roadhouse for a report of an abandoned 9-year-old boy.

The juvenile told officers that his father, David Burge, 38, of Kimper, had left him at the restaurant. While officers were searching the parking lot for Burge, they saw him drive into the parking lot.

Burge admitted to leaving his 9-year-old son in the restaurant while he and his 15-year-old son went to get cigarettes. Officers also noted that Burge smelled like alcohol. During a search, an open bottle of gin was found in the car.

During the arrest. officers say Burge became unruly and attempted to break a window in the police cruiser.

Burge is charged with driving under the influence, wanton endangerment, terroristic threatening, disorderly conduct, menacing, open alcoholic beverage in a vehicle and various traffic violations.
