LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Lexington Police say porch pirates have hit more homes this month, compared to this time last year. With that in mind, the department is reminding you of ways to protect yourself from this crime of opportunity.

'Tis the season for holiday shopping, and porch pirates. "So far this month, there have been 28 reports of thefts of packages. And that is an increase from December of 2018," Brenna Angel, with the Lexington Police Department said.

In just three weeks, that's nine more than last year. The ways to keep your packages from being stolen are simple, but could go a long way to protect yourself from the Grinch. "If you're not going to be able to be home, ask that the package be left with somebody else, a neighbor, have it delivered to a friend's house. Or have the package delivered to your place of business," Angel added.

Or, set up camera. Surveillance video led police to arrest Christian Powers and charge him with Theft of Mail Matter. And investigators are looking for 23-year-old Jordan Shackelford, who they said was shown in surveillance video stealing a package. Lexington Police say if you know of the whereabouts of Shackelford, to contact them.

As always, if you see something, say something.

"Be on the lookout for your neighbors. Try to do everything you can to protect yourself against this crime of opportunity. And we're going to do everything we can at the police department to hold these people accountable."
