Record number of holiday travelers

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — AAA in Lexington says gas prices across the Bluegrass are some of the lowest in the nation, which will make travel a little more affordable for a record breaking number of drivers to be on the road for the holidays.

The average price of a regular gallon of gas in Kentucky is $2.36. That's down about 12 cents from a month ago and it's as low as $2.15 a gallon in some stations around Lexington.

"We've got the laws of supply and demand at work, where we've got a bit of stock, gas stocks, built up. And so our prices started to decline," Manager of Public and Government at AAA, Lori Weaver Hawkins said.

The price of gas in the Bluegrass is expected to hold steady through Thanksgiving. That's good news for a record breaking number of people who are expected to be driving more than 50 miles from home.

"Between Wednesday and Sunday. And of that 55 million, about 50 million will be taking to the roadway. So a big share of that are going to hit the highway," Hawkins said.

The lower gas prices and good weather are expected to bring the highest number of holiday travelers since 2005. AAA says we should be conscious of other drivers everyday, but especially next week.

"Don't get distracted while you're driving, set your GPS before you leave, have a passenger take care of your texts and your calls, so that you can keep your mind and your eyes on the road," Hawkins said.

Because there will be 1.6 million more people on the roads this Thanksgiving holiday, than last.
