LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Members of the Oleika Shriners Temple in Lexington handed out bags of Christmas gifts to Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center patients Saturday.
This is the tenth year the group has put on the event. They did have to change it to be contactless due to the pandemic.
Children at the hospital received cards to fill out before their next appointment.
Then, volunteers shopped for Christmas gifts.
On Saturday, families came back to pick up the gifts before the holidays.
The Shriners say putting a smile on a child's face is the reason they keep this event going.
"Our basic paycheck for anything is a smile on a child's face," President of Oriental Band, Mike Young, said. "If we are in a parade and you wave at a little child and they wave back to you and their face lights up when they see all of our mini trucks and everything that that's what it's about for us. Helping the children".
