LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — The winning design for Town Branch Park's first public art installation has been announced.
The design was created by Brooklyn-based StudioKCA. The sculpture will be called "First Impressions" and it is of a giant replica of an Ammonite fossil with around 120 interlocking, precast panels bolted to a steel frame. Ammonites are one of the organisms that left behind the calcium carbonate that creates limestone, which is the geological foundation upon which Lexington was built and from which Town Branch flows.
Between each panel, there will be a steel plate inscribed with a historic event, from the beginning of Earth's Geological Record to present day Lexington.
The intent of the installation is to make visitors aware of a shared history on this planet.
