LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Harlan County gained national attention this summer after out of work miners blocked train tracks to protest their former company after paychecks they had earned bounced.

Those who were affected are still getting help thanks to the kindness of strangers and thousands of toys are on the way to support mining families for the holidays.

Volunteers filled a U-Haul and part of a charter bus with 4,000 toys. 1,000 of those items are stocking stuffers than an anonymous donor gave. The congregation at Heritage Baptist Church collected all the donations in just a month.

The same church also conducted a school supplies and winter coat drive for families earlier in the year.
