LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Thanksgiving is all about being grateful and a local set of brothers have taken that to heart for the past 20 years.
"We eat pizza for Thanksgiving, because we've had enough turkey," said Double H BBQ Co-owner Bill Hanley.
During Wednesday and Thursday of Thanksgiving week, the brothers, their friends and local firefighters deep fry or smoke more than 400 turkeys at the restaurant on Versailles Road.
Hanley explained, "On the turkeys, you fry them for 3.5 minutes per pound. So it actually can go fairly quick if you get a lot of small turkeys. But unfortunately, that doesn't happen!"
Those who want in on the Double H BBQ deal must first bring their turkey and a toy in advance.
"We'll fry your turkey long as it's under 18 pounds and thawed out. You bring it to us we'll fry or smoke it, you basically do a toy donation, or cash donation," Hanley said. Those donations go to the Lexington Firefighters Toy Drive to bring gifts to children in need for Christmas.
Hanley said, "It's a wonderful cause and we're trying to get as much as we possibly can for the fire department and the kids."
Even if members of the community do not need a turkey cooked, the brothers encourage all to come out for their parking lot party Wednesday and Thursday.
Hanley explained, "We'll be cookin' 34 [turkeys] at a time. A lot of bells will be going off where the timers go. So, you hear a constant dinging out here. Like I say, it's a lot of fun! We have a lot of fun!"
