COVINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Governor Andy Beshear announced millions of dollars have been approved to help repair the Brent Spence Bridge.

The bridge, which crosses the Ohio River and connects northern Kentucky to Cincinnati, suffered damage after a fire ignited when two semitrailers crashed on the lower deck of the bridge in the early morning hours on Wednesday.

The bridge's closure is having a significant economic impact on both sides of the river.

On Saturday, there was good news as Governor Beshear announced that the US Department of Transportation has approved $12 million of funding to help with repairs.

Kentucky Transportation Secretary Jim Gray visited the site for the third day on Saturday, and the governor says inspections are continuing on the bridge.
