LEXINGTON, Ky (LEX 18) — This weekend, it's time to clean out your medicine cabinet and get rid of any unused or expired medicines -- in the proper way, of course.

The goal of National Drug Take Back Day is to give people a free, no-questions-asked way to safely dispose of medicine. Officials say this can prevent thefts and potentially save lives.

Collection sites across the country will accept items Saturday.

People can bring in prescription or over-the-counter pills, vitamins, medicated ointments and lotions, and pet medication.

New this year, collection sites also will take e-cigarettes, vaping pens and cartridges. Batteries must be removed first.

For those who want to get this done early, there's an event in Franfort on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Capitol Building.

In Lexington, people can bring unused medications to Kentucky American Water from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

More information about the program and collection sites is available here.
