WAYNE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — A Wayne County woman has been charged with cruelty to animals and other charges, after police say they found horses without food, leading to the death of five of the animals.

Jacqueline Helton, 53, is charged with 44 counts of cruelty to animals, 25 counts of violation of quarantine and 2 counts of improper disposal of dead animals.

Police say Helton illegally brought 19 horses in from out of state without any paperwork.

She had been ordered to quarantine the horses, but police say when they arrived Friday, they found 25 more horses mixed in with the original 19.

Police allege the animals had no food and their ribs and quarter bone structures were visible.

Five horses died and a sixth is not expected to survive.
