(LEX 18) — An alert will be going out early Thursday regarding the "Great Central U.S. Shakeout" earthquake drill.

The message will be sent out at 10:17 a.m. local time, when millions of people will practice how to "drop, cover and hold on," according to the drill's website.

About 3 million participants and counting are expected to take part in several states throughout the Midwest and Southeast, including Kentucky.

The drill coincides with the anniversary of the big quake that hit San Francisco 30 years ago. The Loma Prieta earthquake hit Oct. 17, 1989, killing 69 people and injuring 3,800.
