Favorite spot for hikers staying open during the winter

POWELL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — The fall foliage is fading away as winter approaches the Bluegrass.

But there are still some winter days that are great for a hike, and now a Red River Gorge landmark is trying something new for those who brave the cold.

Miguel's Pizza in Powell County just announced that it is staying open on certain days during winter months.

"A lot of people in Lexington, in town, say 'let's meet at Starbucks,' or 'let's go to wherever.' But here, it's 'let's go out to the Gorge and meet at Miguel's,'" said Jonathan Stofer. "It's a family. It's a community place here."

That community is why, rain or shine, cold or hot, the ovens at Miguel's stay busy.

"This has been the busiest year yet for us," said Mark Ventura, a general business manager of Miguel's.

Soon, this will be the longest year for the landmark.

Instead of shutting down after Thanksgiving, some employees are staying over the winter to help keep the popular spot open on Friday nights and weekends.

"We'll still have breakfast in the mornings, we'll still have everything that we usually do. We might try to even experiment a little bit more," said Ventura.

Stofer said this idea is great because he will have a place to come home to if he doesn't return to Lexington.

"And it's great because I stay here year-round when I don't go back to Lexington to see my parents. And it's nice to have a place to come home to," said Stofer.

After Thanksgiving, Miguel's will stay open on Friday nights from 5 to 8 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
