LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 19) — The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department has decided to offer free flu shots at the Fayette Mall from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.

The LFCHD will be located near the interior entrance of Dillard's at the mall.

"An annual flu shot is the best way to fight the flu each fall and winter," said LFCHD spokesman Kevin Hall. "The special clinic lets us test our emergency preparedness skills by giving a large amount of shots in a short amount of time."

The flu shot is recommended for those aged 6 months and older, according to LFCHD. Last flu season, Lexington had five deaths that were related to the flu and 506 confirmed cases of the flu.

"Lexington had 506 confirmed cases last year, but that represents a small fraction since most flu cases aren't lab-confirmed," said Hall. "The CDC estimates five to 20 percent of the U.S. population gets the flu each year, costing an estimated $10.4 billion in medical expenses and $16.3 billion in lost earnings."

For those unable to attend the event, the health department will offer flu shots from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. They will also offer flu shots at 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. These flu shots will be offered in the Public Health Clinic at 650 Newtown Pike.

No appointment is necessary for those shots, according to LFCHD.

The cost of the shot depends on the insurance you have. You can call (859) 288-2483 for more details.
