LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — It's the season of giving and as University of Kentucky students prepare to leave for winter break, they can donate unwanted items in Give & Go bins.
“Through the holiday period, we're able to place these bins in each of the residence halls across campus,” said Tim Clark, the Associate Director of Facilities Services at the university.
Clothes, furniture, household items and non-perishable food are all accepted in the bins.
"All of the food items are actually given to the Big Blue Pantry for other students to use. Students who have food insecurities,” said Clark.
Non-food items will go to Goodwill. This is the third year UK has partnered with the charity.
"It couldn't be any simpler for them to donate items,” said Clark. “It's part of our sustainability strategic plan to divert waste."
The Give & Go bins are put out on campus at the end of every semester.
In May, about 21,000 pounds of donations were collected. Last winter, about 2,000 pounds were collected.
