LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Summer is over, and flu season begins.

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department said Monday morning the first case of the seasonal viral illness had been confirmed by lab results.

Spokesman Kevin Hall said the news should spur people to get a flu shot, if they haven't already.

“A seasonal flu shot is recommended to all people ages 6 months and older and is the best way to avoid getting the flu,” Hall said in a statement.

Officials said Lexington recorded 506 confirmed cases and five deaths from the flu last season.

The health department will provide free flu shots Oct. 10 from 1 to 7 p.m. at Fayette Mall, near the interior entrance of Dillard’s.
