LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — More than a dozen people in our homeless community received free dental care on Saturday morning.

The Day of Dignity event was hosted by the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry and it was the first of its kind.

The event organizer said they wanted to work with the homeless population because they typically don't have access to consistent dental care.

And those who don't take care of their teeth can develop infections or even land in the emergency room if cavities are not taken care of.

Students, faculty and staff all pitched in to volunteer.

"It's just really us being able to put our skills to the test and also be able to give back to the community," said Sarah Chhadh, event organizer. "It's great and it's a lot of fun so we're excited to be here."

The College of Dentistry set aside up to $5,000 for each patient to get the care they needed.
