LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Friday marks the opening day for the Fall Meet at Keeneland.

Keeneland will welcome thousands to the grounds for the first race of the season on Friday morning.

This opening day comes as Keeneland President Bill Thomason said reassuring the safety of both their horses and riders is at the forefront of their thoughts.

Thomason recently announced the creation of two new positions focused on keeping horses and jockeys safe.

One person came on board as director of racing surfaces, where he will oversee the racing conditions.

Also, a doctor came on board to review all race-related accidents in order to help prevent them in the future.

"We love our horses, we care for our horses, and we are always going to do everything we can do to keep them safe," said Thomason.

On Friday, the gates are scheduled to open at 11 a.m., with the first post time at 1:05 p.m.

This Fall Meet goes until Saturday, October 26, with no races on Mondays or Tuesdays.

And, as always, general admission tickets are only $5.
