LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX News) — The Kentucky Cattlemen's Association is voicing opposition to President Donald Trump's proposal to allow up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported into the United States tariff-free.
In a statement posted Monday, the organization said it strongly opposes the proposal, arguing that efforts to lower beef prices for consumers should not come at the expense of Kentucky cattle producers.
"While KCA understands the importance of keeping beef affordable for American families, we do not think short-term reduced retail prices should come at the expense of Kentucky's 32,000 cattle producers," the association said.
The statement comes after Trump announced plans to allow increased tariff-free imports of ground beef as part of an effort to reduce prices for consumers and increase supply.
The Kentucky Cattlemen's Association said it plans to continue monitoring the situation and remain engaged with Kentucky's congressional delegation as discussions move forward.
"KCA will continue to monitor the situation in the coming weeks," the organization said. "We will remain engaged in this discussion with our Congressional leaders on behalf of Kentucky's cattle producers."
Kentucky is one of the nation's leading cattle-producing states, and the association represents thousands of beef producers across the Commonwealth. The group argues that policies affecting imports can have a significant impact on local farmers and ranchers.
The White House has indicated additional details on the proposal are expected in the coming weeks.
