LOUISVILLE, Ky. (LEX News) — Kentucky students can receive an excused absence from school to attend the Kentucky State Fair, a longstanding tradition that celebrates the state's agriculture, culture and heritage.

State Rep. Kim Holloway of District 2 recently reminded families about the option in a social media post, encouraging parents to take advantage of the educational opportunity.

The Kentucky State Fair traces its roots to 1902 and has long served as a showcase for the state's agricultural industry. Each year, participants from across Kentucky enter livestock, crops, quilts, baked goods, crafts and other items in competitions vying for coveted blue ribbons.

One of the fair's signature attractions, the World's Championship Horse Show, has been part of the event for more than a century.

Today, the fair continues to highlight Kentucky's agricultural heritage while also featuring food, live entertainment, exhibits and educational displays.

Under state law, students may take one excused absence during the school year to attend the fair. Families wishing to use the absence must complete the required documentation through Kentucky Venues.

The Kentucky State Fair runs through Aug. 30 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.
