LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton and two council members are celebrating the 100th mile of paved trails and bike lanes in Fayette County.

A celebration ceremony took place on Monday morning on part of the West Hickman Trail in Veterans Park, which is where the 100th paved mile is located.

The trail is a shared use greenway that connects the park and the elementary school to the bikeway system.

Development is not stopping there; many more miles of projects are scheduled for the next couple of years.

"We have met the 100th mile and we have a new trail system going in downtown that's going to connect the horse park to Masterson Station," said Fourth District Councilwoman Susan Lamb. "We have such an exciting time in our town right now."

Lexington's first bike lane was installed on Waller Avenue in 1995.

In 2000, there were only six miles of paved bike ways in Fayette County.
